Meat American BBQ at The Glass Jar

I just love discovering a hidden gem and Meat is exactly that. A pop-up restaurant within The Glass Jar (which happens to be one of my favourite bars in Margate) was only ever going to be a brilliant thing.

I had visited Meat before and really enjoyed it, but since then they've launched a new menu so I had to go and check it out! Having heard that the restaurant is run by the people behind the amazing Margate Smokehouse, which was an extremely popular stall at all of the local food fairs, I was expecting good things!

The first thing that impressed me was the reasonable menu prices...and that's before seeing what you actually get for your money! Sampling a menu is all about variety and my friend and I were lucky to be able to try lots of the dishes that they offer.

Starters included a super cool mac 'n' cheese lollipop accompanied with homemade BBQ sauce. I had never tried macaroni cheese before (I know) and did have my reservations about it but I can honestly say I'm a total convert! I've been thinking about it a lot since... Another starter we tried was the smoked chicken wings with blue cheese dip and celery. They were enormous - as wings should be! I would highly recommend ordering these as they were one one of my favourite dishes of the whole evening and £5 is an extremely decent price to pay! The Hot Mess, which is pulled pork, fries and beef chilli was also fantastic. The pork and the chilli worked so well together and it's big enough to be a main course!

Wanting to truly immerse myself in the experience of the venue during my visit, I ordered The Glass Jar cocktail (literally, any excuse). I'm a sucker for a girly drink, and with an ingredients list of Sailor Jerry spiced rum, Passoa passion fruit liqueur, Limoncello, pineapple and cranberry - it was a sweet and colourful dream. And sure enough, it was served in a glass jar.

Next, and already pretty full, we tried the main courses. I opted for the beef brisket; served in a brioche bun and, like most of the mains, it was accompanied by plentiful servings of fries, coleslaw and BBQ beans. The quality of the food was good and I particularly enjoyed the slaw with the dish, which was really fresh and not too creamy. We sampled the delicious buttermilk chicken (which seems to be everywhere right now!), gigantic onion rings...and some more mac 'n' cheese. All of the mains are gluten free - something important to Sharon and John, the owners of the pop-up. For a place specialising in meat dishes, I think the vegetarian options are great! Nobody is left out.

To finish our meal, we bravely ordered dessert. The homemade warm chocolate brownie with cream was a sweet relief after the onslaught of all that meaty goodness.

We spent a really enjoyable evening at The Glass Jar. The atmosphere was good and it was clear that Sharon and John are extremely passionate about what they do and want to share their love of good food with others. An exciting development for Meat is that they also now offer a takeaway service - perfect for the upcoming summer months. I will definitely be enjoying this fab food on the beach! My tip: if you fancy some free entertainment with your meal, The Glass Jar has live music on Sunday afternoons.

Meat is open Thurs-Sun.
